FDR CUSTOMER ANNOUNCEMENTS

Support for z/OS V1.3:

For ABR customers who plan to install z/OS V1.3 before August 2002:

If you are running a version of ABR lower than V5.3 level 60, we recommend that you install ABR V5.3 level 62. Call or email Innovation to request an install tape for V5.3 level 62.

You can run ABR V5.3 level 60 or 61 under z/OS V1.3 with these zaps applied:

   P-53.5208
P-53.5207 - if you are also licensed for FASTCPK

You can obtain these zaps from the Innovation FTP site or email us (at support@fdrinnovation.com) to have them emailed back.

For ABR customers who plan to install z/OS V1.3 in August 2002 or later:

We recommend that you install ABR V5.4 L20, which will be available in July. You can call or email us now to request that V5.4 be shipped to you when available.

For FDR customers with any combination of FDR products that does not include ABR:

You can run V5.3 level 50 or above under z/OS V1.3.
V 5.3 level 61 and below must have these zaps applied:

P-53.5208 - for all FDR customers
P-53.5207 - if you are also licensed for FASTCPK

Additional ZAPs may be required, depending on your level. For details, see the Operating System Requirements page.

You can obtain these zaps from the Innovation FTP site or email us (at support@fdrinnovation.com) to have them emailed back.

Note: z/OS V1.3 customers MUST also apply the PTF for IBM APAR OW52981 if it is not already installed on your z/OS V1.3 system.

Support for large disks (up to 32760 cylinders):

IBM now supports disk volumes up to 32760 cylinders with the proper hardware and software support installed. Official support for large disks will be included in FDR V5.4 level 20, due for general availability in July 2002. FDR will identify these disks in messages as "3390-27".

Customers requiring large disk support before that time can contact Innovation to request an interim release containing that support.

Support for Linux CDL volumes:

As of Linux kernel version 2.4, the IBM mods to Linux for zSeries and S/390 support a new disk format known as CDL (Compatible Disk Layout). Unlike the original Linux disk format, now known as Linux Disk Layout (LDL), CDL disks have an MVS-style volume label and VTOC and can be mounted on OS/390 and z/OS systems. The VTOC contains up to 3 datasets representing Linux partitions (file systems).

However, CDL disks have a non-standard VTOC and changes to FDR were required to support them.

Customers wanting to dump and restore CDL disks with FDR must install FDR V5.3 level 62 or apply these zaps to FDR V5.3 levels 50 through 61:

   P-53.5211 for all FDR customers
P-53.5217 for FASTCPK customers (to prevent a loop)

You can obtain these zaps from the Innovation FTP site or email us (at support@fdrinnovation.com) to have them emailed back.

The FDR zap enables full-volume or dataset backup and restore of the CDL disks. Dataset backup and restore will backup or restore an entire Linux partition containing a complete file system. Backup and restore of individual Linux files is not supported. IBM recommends that when restoring a Linux partition, you should either restore back on top of the original partition, or create a new partition with the same size and location as the original one (possibly on a different volume).

FDR/UPSTREAM for Linux for zSeries and S/390, a separately licensed component of the FDR family of products, supports file-level backup and restore of Linux files.

You should not attempt to COMPAKT a CDL disk. The CPK zap is included so that a CPK MAP of a CDL volume will not go into a loop.

See the member LINUX in the ICL (Installation Control Library) of V5.3 level 62 for more details or on our FTP site in the download\Linux directory.
