FDR/UPSTREAM and UPSTREAM/SOS Newsletter

Training Class

The next training class for FDR/UPSTREAM, FDRSOS & UPSTREAM/SOS is scheduled for June 11-13, 2002. This will be a three-day course for both new and established users of Innovation Data Processing's FDR/UPSTREAM, FDRSOS and UPSTREAM/SOS.

Registration: You may register by phone by calling Innovation Data Processing at 973-890-7300, fax to 973-890-7147 or email to sales@fdrinnovation.com. The latest client release of FDR/UPSTREAM and UPSTREAM/SOS is now available, 3.1.6B.

The new features in the FDR/UPSTREAM client release provides:

FDR/UPSTREAM expands the database and messaging systems supported to now include Netware GroupWise.

The Upstream agent operates with GWTSA - the backup agent supplied with Novell GroupWise 6. The GroupWise Target Service Agent (GWTSA) provides reliable backups of a running GroupWise system by successfully backing up open files and locked files, rather than skipping them as a file-level backup facility would do. The GroupWise Target Service Agent (GWTSA) is a GroupWise-specific API that works with other backup software. The GWTSA has no user interface of its own, but its presence running along with supporting backup software such as FDR/UPSTREAM provides GroupWise options in the backup software that would not otherwise be available.

FDR/UPSTREAM has been Tested and Approved and certified for Novell's Netware 6.

UPSTREAM operates as an NLM with SMS support and JAVA server interface or from Windows workstation. Designed for automated operation with centrally administered management, HSM and Auto Recall, data reduction techniques, file transfer, with advanced features such as physical disk support and non disruptive online database support.

NetWare Cluster Aware

FDR/UPSTREAM is now sufficiently cluster aware to be able to perform backups of Novell Cluster Services. Included in NetWare® 6, Novell Cluster Services™ 1.6 is a reliable and cost-effective storage area network (SAN) solution that provides you with virtually uninterrupted access to your critical storage resources. Novell provides backup facilities in SMS, but backup applications have to be cluster aware to be able to use them. Upstream provides that capability in 3.1.6B

SIMPLIFIED NETWARE BACKUPS

UPSTREAM now provides a simple and easy to define method for complete Full system backup for NetWare servers. (Novell SMS) You can now use the \\. file specification to indicate a full system backup. UPSTREAM automatically generates UNC file specs for all resources (volumes), and for the Server Specific Info. This is a recommended method as it is simpler to specify and is self-maintaining - new volumes are recognized automatically.

Upstream now supports Oracle databases operating in S/390 LINUX as well as Intel Linux.

FDR/Upstream's support for Oracle databases continues to expand to now include support for both S/390 LINUX and Intel LINUX.

The latest version of FDR/UPSTREAM Media Manager Support adds implementation of version 2.0 of Oracle RMAN MMAPI (without proxy copy) that gives more control over the backup process. 2.0 MMAPI is supported in Oracle 8i and higher and will be used automatically, while earlier releases of Oracle still remain supported through 1.1 version MMAPI. Version 2.0.6.2 works with Oracle9 and adds support for Intel Linux and Linux/390 (follow UNIX path). This new version of FDR/UPSTREAM Media Manager Support works in multi-user mode and requires FDR/UPSTREAM version 3.1.5 or higher installed to utilizes the new features of FDR/UPSTREAM attach manager mode.

FDR/UPSTREAM powerful management facilities are now available to manage the next generation operating system, Windows XP

FDR/UPSTREAM now supports Windows XP Automated System Recovery.

FDR/UPSTREAM now has the capability of helping you prepare to recover your Windows XP system from within this new ASR mode. When Windows XP is booted into ASR mode and the necessary disaster recovery planning steps have been followed, Windows XP will perform only as much of its installation as necessary to support the execution of the Upstream backup application to perform a system state restore.

Recovering a Windows 2000/XP System

You can now restore a full system with the file spec \\. or \\machine_name - the same method that's available for backups. Note that if your system is a Domain Controller you must be booted in Directory Services Repair Mode.

FDR/UPSTREAM expands the support for its database agents for Lotus Notes/Domino to now include support for Intel Linux platforms.

The agent provides all of the features included in the agent available on Windows, AIX, Solaris and OS/390 Unix which include on-line database backup, transaction log backups, point-in-time restores and more. FDR/Upstream provides a robust solution for the protection of critical Notes and Domino information, enabling online backups of Lotus Notes and Domino R5 without disrupting user productivity. FDR/UPSTREAM supports Lotus & Domino databases using the Lotus Domino Notes backup API. The Domino agent provides UPSTREAM the ability to perform on-line full and incremental backups of databases, even if in use, and also supports backing up Notes transaction logs. Upstream can also be used to recover a database in a disaster recovery and as well as a point in time recovery.

The "Director" management interface latest Enhancements

A number of new UPSTREAM Director features including support for the Microsoft SQL Server PlugIn and Host Reporting:

The Director is the distributed management interface that was written as a Java application and provides a user friendly "Windows" like graphical user interface that can run on any platform that provides a Java Virtual Machine and TCP/IP support. Using the UPSTREAM Director you can, from a workstation anywhere in your network, specify backups and restores, check the status of running operations, retrieve log files, perform profile configuration and more:
