FDRPAS Announcements
October 30, 2001

Recommended maintenance to be applied before running FDRPAS:
The list of IBM apars for FDRPAS has been updated. APARs OW49672 (catalog ENQ) and OW51840 (catalog hang after swap) are new. Please check this matrix against your operating system level to see which IBM APARs should be applied. Brief APAR descriptions follow.

CUSTOMERS RUNNING ESA 5.x OR OS/390 1.1-2.5:

You MUST apply the PTF for APAR OW41942 before attempting to swap a volume from a device with a 3-digit address to one with a 4-digit address.

CUSTOMERS RUNNING OS/390 1.1-2.8:

You MUST apply the PTF for APAR OW41858 before attempting to swap a volume with PAV (Parallel Access Volumes) on an IBM 2105 Shark or an EMC Symmetrix. This PTF adds a PAV interface routine that is invoked by FDRPAS V5.4/10 and above.

CUSTOMERS RUNNING DFSMS 1.5 (included in OS/390 2.7, 2.8 and 2.9):
You MUST apply the PTF for APAR OW51840 if you have applied the PTF for IBM APAR OW48166 or the DFSMS 1.5 catalog level set APAR OW50156. This problem causes a loop in the catalog address space at the end of a swap if you are NOT using ECS (Enhanced Catalog Sharing).

CUSTOMERS RUNNING ANY RELEASE OF OS/390:

You may wish to apply the PTFs for APARs OW46936 and OW47168 to avoid an occasional ABEND0C4 during a swap. The ABEND0C4 is not harmful (the swap will complete successfully) but it causes an unnecessary SVC DUMP.

CUSTOMERS RUNNING ANY RELEASE OF OS/390 or z/OS:

You MUST apply the PTF for APAR OW48166 if you are using ECS (Enhanced Catalog Sharing) in a parallel sysplex. The PTF, available 7/12/2001, will automatically remove a catalog from ECS if it is on a volume that is swapped. If you have not applied the PTF, or you wish to avoid the error messages, IBM's recommended circumvention is to remove catalogs from ECS before you swap the volumes on which those catalogs reside. To determine if you are using ECS, issue this console command on any system:

F CATALOG,ECSHR(STATUS)

If all catalogs displayed have a status of "inactive", ECS is not in use. Please read the APAR text for the details. Note: customers running DFSMS 1.5 must also apply the PTF for APAR OW51840.

If you have IBM 2105 (Shark) disks, you MUST apply the PTF for APAR OW46459 to solve problems with binding and unbinding aliases.

You may wish to apply the PTFs for APARs OW46101 and OW45683 to avoid potential performance problems after a swap. OW46101 is a performance problem on LLA-managed datasets. OW45683 is a performance problem after a swap to a Shark with PAV (Parallel Access Volumes).

CUSTOMERS RUNNING OS/390 2.10 or z/OS 1.1:

You may wish to apply the PTF for APAR OW49783 to avoid a problem with dynamic I/O configuration after a swap.

You should apply the PTF for APAR OW49672. The APAR describes a performance problem due to incorrect ENQ options used by the catalog address space, but it has been implicated in several hangs when swapping a volume containing a shared catalog.

REQUIRED HDS (Hitachi Data Systems) MICROCODE UPDATE:

Customers swapping to a HDS 9xxx Lightning disk subsystem must insure that the microcode level is 01-13-19/00 or higher. Without this microcode, FDRPAS monitor tasks may not recognize that a swap is starting.
