FDR/UPSTREAM and UPSTREAM/SOS news

FDR/UPSTREAM client release 3.1.4C and FDR/UPSTREAM OS390 version 3.1.4 is now available

New features in the FDR/Upstream family of products:

FDR/UPSTREAM powerful management facilities are now available to manage Linux!!

FDR/UPSTREAM now supports SuSE Linux on S/390 hardware! Upstream's powerful facilities can now be used to manage the much reported and fastest growing computing segment…S390 Linux. FDR/Upstream also now provides support for Intel based Linux.

UPSTREAM™s Linux support includes most of the facilities available for UPSTREAM™s other UNIX implementations including:

  • Command line, character mode, and UPSTREAM Client user interface.
  • Full-featured daemon.
  • Backup, restore, file transfer and other UPSTREAM storage management features.
  • A variety of file system features including hard links, symbolic links, owners, NFS, single file system support, etc.
The Director

The UPSTREAM Director is a completely new full featured GUI client user interface that can be used for almost all UPSTREAM platforms, Windows NT and 2000, Novell NLM, AIX, Solaris, HPUX, Tru64, Linux and OS390 Unix Systems Services.

The Director was written as a Java application and provides a user friendly "Windows" like graphical user interface that can run on any platform that provides a Java Virtual Machine and TCP/IP support. Using the UPSTREAM Director you can, from a workstation anywhere in your network, specify backups and restores, check the status of running operations, retrieve log files, perform profile configuration and more.

The UPSTREAM Director was designed to have the ability to communicate and control and use the current functionality of the Upstream client Services and OS390 mainframe Repository components. The Director introduces a powerful new functionality: centralized single view and control from the client.

The Director does not actually perform any backup or restore operations but only directs them:

  • Communicates directly (TCP/IP only) with the Upstream OS390 Repository component to provide profile security checking, inquire backup profile information for viewing and deletion, profile definition viewing, updating, additions, deletions and re-loading, host monitoring/status and control and to manage the server registration list.
  • Communicates directly (TCP/IP only) and concurrently with any number of with the Upstream client Services components to initiate backup and restore actions both physical and logical, monitor and control backup and restore progress, view current operation/status, get the complete log, get physical disk and system information.
  • Produces and manipulates the parameter or ".DAT" files which represent an action such as backup or restore for the Services or Repository to use.
Windows 2000 support

FDR/Upstream provides extensive support for Windows 2000 and has recently has expanded that support for Windows 2000 to include:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000… FDR/UPSTREAM now includes a backup agent compatible with the Microsoft Extensible Storage Engine (ESE98) that allows online full and transaction log backups of Microsoft Exchange 2000 databases
  • Windows 2000 User Quotas. User Quotas allow administrators to control how much disk space individual users may consume. This support is enabled through the easy to use FDR/UPSTREAM feature called PlugIns. A PlugIn is a shared library which is loaded into UPSTREAM when needed and extends UPSTREAM's capabilities without the use of an external program. A single backup can include files that may or may not use PlugIns and PlugIn types can be mixed.
  • Support for back up and restoring the Windows 2000 COM+ Class registration database.
  • Support for back up and restoring Windows 2000 Certificate Server database. This support is enabled through the easy to use FDR/UPSTREAM feature, PlugIns.
  • Support for back up and restoring Windows 2000 Cluster Server quorum database and also uses the PlugIn feature.
  • Innovation has certified and documented Upstream support for Windows 2000 System State Disaster Recovery. The disaster recovery for Windows® 2000 Server, system state data comprises the registry, COM+Class Registration database, system startup files, and the Certificate Services database. These have been tested and documented.

FDR/UPSTREAM has expanded the support for Domino Lotus Notes R5.

  • Upstream now supports multiple simultaneous backups running in parallel. This enhancement makes the job of backing up many GB of data seem much easier…because its faster!
  • Detection of new databases during incrementals insures that all databases are backed up to insure that databases are completely recoverable, Upstream now provides support for all active logs in log file backups
Upstream OS/390 Unix
  • Upstream OS/390 UNIX provides a backup agent for Notes R5 Domino servers for OS/390 Unix Systems Services. Now Domino Lotus Notes on your MVS systems can enjoy all the features available on our other supported systems including transaction log incrementals, disaster recovery, backup via the Notes backup API and more.

Oracle

FDR/Upstream's support for Oracle databases has been significantly improved with the new multi channel support! This latest enhancement supports multiple simultaneous backups running in parallel. Upstream will transparently manage the backups by splitting the backup into separate backup profiles under the covers. No administrator intervention is required. This powerful enhancement will significantly reduce the runtime for backups and restores!

Innovation has been a member in the Oracle Backup Solutions Provider (BSP) program that permits FDR/UPSTREAM to operate as an Oracle Media Manager Library product. FDR/Upstream supports and can now be used with Oracle Recovery Manager (Oracle 8) or Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility (Oracle 7).

The Oracle Recovery Manager is an extremely full-featured backup facility. Through its use you can use FDR/UPSTREAM to perform full, incremental and tablespace backups of databases, tablespaces and datafiles. Some of the features supported include backup sets, image copies, stored scripts, Recovery Manager reports, tags, integrity checking and more. All of the powerful features of recovery manager are now available to UPSTREAM users under both local and host control.

FDR/UPSTREAM also provides a backup management suite for Oracle databases that include a Backup Management tool (GUI written in Java) and command line utilities that include a scheduling utility, and a backup and restore utility.

The FDR/UPSTREAM backup management suite for Oracle databases primarily targets databases running in ARCHIVELOG mode and can take full advantage of FDR/UPSTREAM backup suite options, like ONLINE (hot) backups, incremental backups of REDO logs, and perform full database and tablespace media recovery.

Minor Upstream fish stories…bites or nibbles

NFS and single file system support for UNIX. Your UNIX system backups can now include files and directories that are NFS mounted. An administrator can also restrict backups to files and directories which are in a single file system, regardless of whether other file systems are mounted in the path.

FDR/UPSTREAM is now automatically capable of supporting multiple simultaneous executing instances of UPSTREAM in the same directory in UNIX and Windows.

FDR/UPSTREAM, through its use of Novell's SMS for file access, is capable of backing up open and active files on NetWare v5.1 NSS volumes.

Additional support for Linux S390

FDRINSTANT supports full physical volume backups and restores of disk volumes formatted for use with Linux running on S/390 or zSeries systems. Contact Innovation for more information.
