FDR/UPSTREAM supports a wide variety of PC LAN/UNIX/SAN platforms and server file systems.

Windows:

FDR/UPSTREAM provides a storage management solution, including backup, restore and disaster recovery, for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 Servers and Workstations. FDR/UPSTREAM provides support for critical system information in a Windows system and can be run as an Application or Service. Support includes Long file and directory names, Files and directory names with Unicode characters, File and directory Access Control Lists (ACLs), Extended attributes (EAs) and alternate data streams for files, Windows Registry, Event Logs, Active Directory, System State, Automated System Recovery (ASR) and also includes a number of features such as reparse points, mountpoints, compressed files, sparse files, encrypted files, user quotas. UPSTREAM supports Windows Clusters and provides online database agent for SQL Server and MS Exchange and also supports Volume Shadowcopy Service (VSS). FDR/UPSTREAM supports Windows 64 bit Itanium and AMD processors.

FDR/UPSTREAM fully supports backups of VMware’s ESX server virtual machines.

There are two methods of back ups for an ESX server:

  1. Installing UPSTREAM on the ESX server’s console. In this case you install the vmware/Linux version of the FDR/UPSTREAM client. This will allow you to back up the entire ESX operating system, as well as the .vmdk and .vmx files for each virtual machine while they are online. UPSTREAM is capable of backing up the .vmdk files which reside on VMware’s proprietary VMFS file system. This method does not support file level back ups and restores of the virtual machines.

  2. Installing Upstream ‘inside’ each virtual machine. This provides file level backup and restore capabilities for your virtual machines. UPSTREAM runs in all supported VMware virtual machine environments.

A combination of the two backup methods above maybe be recommended for some environments as this will provide both complete system recovery and single file restore

UNIX & z/OS UNIX

FDR/UPSTREAM provides extensive support for Novell Netware that includes Novell NetWare ® 386, v4.x, and v5.x and 6 completely, and has been Novell tested and approved certified for Novell 5 and 6. FDR/UPSTREAM offers a choice for backing up Novell servers as it can operates directly from the server it’s backing up as an" NLM" (Netware Loadable Module) with JAVA management interface or from a Windows or OS/2 workstation providing fast backup performance and reduced network overhead. FDR/UPSTREAM comprehensive support for NetWare includes NetWare Directory Services (NDS), SMS, Cluster Services support, Netware NSS volumes, name spaces, compressed data, and security attributes are all supported. Also included is special NetWare file and directory characteristics, bindery files, trustee rights, directory restrictions, unattended login migration and auto recall and more... Upstream also provides non-disruptive online database agents for GroupWise.

UNIX: FDR/UPSTREAM is a native UNIX application that supports AIX®, Sun Solaris, Intel Solaris, HP-UX, Compaq Tru64, Intel Linux, S/390 Linux and OS/390 Unix.

FDR/UPSTREAM for UNIX supports symbolic links, case sensitivity, NFS mounts, open files, owner user and group for files and directories, access dates and more are stored automatically. Logical and physical character volumes as well as files and directories can also be backed up and restored. The interface can be either command line full screen, or JAVA based. Single File System support allows you to restrict your backups to the file system specified in the backup spec using the file spec parameter regardless of where the file system is mounted in the directory structure.

UPSTREAM currently supports the following file systems for all UNIX flavors:
  • The native file system (ext2 for Linux, JFS for AIX, etc.).
  • NFS (when requested).
In addition we also support:
  • Linux: ext3, Reiser, XFS, JFS, GFS, VxFS (Veritas file system), MAPFS, PVFS and VMFS (VMWare).
We also have an environment variable which allows the user to specify the magic number for any new file systems.
  • AIX: JFS2
  • Solaris: UFS, VxFS (Veritas file system)
  • HPUX: HFS, VxFS (Veritas file system)
  • USS: HFS, ZFS
  • Tru64: UFS, MSFS

z/OS UNIX : FDR/Upstream provides extensive support for z/OS Unix Systems Services that provides file level granularity for the HFS and zFS files. z/OS UNIX and UNIX Systems Services (formally OpenEdition/MVS) on z/OS is similar to the other UNIX client versions of FDR/UPSTREAM, and supports the following UNIX Systems Services features:

  • Backup agent for Lotus Notes Domino
  • External Links
  • Symbolic and Hard Links
  • Auditing flags
  • HFS Extended Attributes
  • ZFS Extended Attributes
  • Unix owners and permissions
  • Case sensitivity

LINUX:

FDR/UPSTREAM and UPSTREAM RESERVOIR provides extensive support for Linux that includes:
  • x86 (Intel & AMD) Linux
  • Linux for pSERIES (IBM Power systems)
  • Linux for zSERIES
UPSTREAM provides centralized storage management for Linux with automated backup/restore, file transfer and storage management operations. UPSTREAM offers unique data reduction techniques and online database agents for Oracle, DB2, and Lotus Notes Domino to minimize the amount of data transmitted while leveraging the services, security, and dependability of the Linux operating system.

FDR/UPSTREAM’s provides extensive support for Linux including advanced UNIX file system specific features include hard links, symbolic links, owners, single file system support, support for Reiser file system as well as ext2, ext3, GFS, MAPFS, GPFS, and remote NFS attachments.

A powerful and unique addition to the FDR/UPSTREAM storage management tool is the UPSTREAM Rescuer. The UPSTREAM Rescuer is a stand alone system recovery facility for Intel Linux, SuSE zLINUX and Solaris systems.

UPSTREAM Rescuer allows administrators to completely restore a system from data that is saved in FDR/UPSTREAM without separate system backups. UPSTREAM Rescuer provides this essential system recovery supplement because it is completely integrated into FDR/UPSTREAM. UPSTREAM Rescuer can recover a user’s entire system, including their Linux system boot disk, file systems and device drivers as well as all their application programs and data files.
